Burning Man 2019 Metamorphosis

This marks my 11th burning man. I’ve been attending the event since I was 18 and I’m 30 now. It’s been a crazy whirlwind. I never knew it would become such a huge no enormous part of my life. Not many people can say they’ve done any one thing for 10 years let alone 12. Whatever people say about it, i find it to be a truly healing experience. This year I spent 15 days out in that hell of a desert surrounded by crazy wierdos friends and strangers alike. It’s magnificent, disgusting, silly, magical, and exhausting but I keep coming back. Normally i only bring out film cameras and a disposable, but this year I brought along a digital camera. It’s a bit disjointed in terms of the entire event, but there’s certainly some beauty still to be had here.

Bonnydoon Beach

I’ve been wanting to come down here and shoot some photos on the train tracks. (which we did) but our inspiration in the moment went so many other directions. My friend Anna had some ideas involving props and setting the stage and it kinda went from there. Sand, and light, movement and form. This was a pretty rad magical creative session that I’m stoked to share.

Marin Headlands

My coworker and I got together to do some hiking up in the Marin Headlands. He brought his dog along and we had a pretty rad time. Never ceases to blow me away how beautiful this hike is even on a foggy day.

Sibley Sunset

I’d been wanting to come here and fly my drone around and take some photos at sunset. I’ve spent so much time here for sunrise and often wondered what the landscape would look like. Different shadows, different colors, different locations to watch it from. My friend Logan brought the ole dog along which i’m not always stoked on cuz they can be tricky to shoot with but he managed to really become part of it in some special ways. Whenever we hang out we always model for each other so I got in front of the camera for a few of these. He caught some sweet shots and the lighting was spectacular. Everything was edited by me but it didn’t require much.

Carizzo P2

The previous page was some of my favs and these are I guess B-Roll favs but also still stoked to share them.

Carizzo P1

This year went out to see the “superbloom” with my friend Kate. It was our first little roadtrip together and I think we had a pretty successful time. Captured some pretty amazing moments and places. You can never really do it all, but we managed to really see some amazing things.

This is the first set.

Weekend Getaway

Space Matador

One of my favorite local oakland bands and my good friend Kate, collab’d together to make this amazing Space Matador costume for their tour. I was stoked to take some photos to document it for her portfolio

A flower's Bloom

My good friend Skyla is a dancer in the SF Ballet. She recently asked me to document a short film she was making. It was a pretty awesome process. Beautiful choreography and so much awesome production behind the scenes. I’ll have to share my behind photos at some point. Here’s my picks from of the actual dancing.

Kauai archive P1.

Life’s been kinda crazy since i got back from Kauai. Been so busy with winter and work and general life stuff. I finished these awhile ago but haven’t quite been in the place to get them posted and up here. This trip was a real trip. take that for what it’s worth. it was healing to get out of the stormy weather for awhile. And while it def rained plenty there was also tons of sun. Want to go back or to another island some day. I just turned 30 and while alot has happened to make me feel old I can’t wait for the next 10 years.

Kauai Large Format

I’ve been crazy busy and wanting to throw up some new content on here. I’ve got lots of stuff I’m ready to upload soon. Can’t wait. Anyways been experimenting with some panorama style photos. These are far from perfect. I learned alot about how to take the photos and how to stitch them together. Big lesson….don’t rush it. Also moving things like waves get real tricky. Combining foreground and backgrounds is hard to match up too. Anyways you get the idea. These are still pretty cool.

Body Language

I recently went down to Santa Cruz to shoot a friends band and see some friends. Jacey and Kyle are the two kidds here playing and singing their hearts out. It’s always an experiment to shoot in low lighting situations. Even with the tricky atmosphere I managed to score at least a few good shots.

Been Awhile

Life has been kinda hectic. I’ve been all over the place; Traveling, working, holiday parties, video projects, taxes, bills, car problems, deaths, reformatting my computer, rebuilding my computer. Man the list goes on. It’s been a tough month admittedly. Trying to get back on my feet. I managed to catch up with a few projects from mid January so here they are. This is a trip up to the top of mt. tam with some friends. It was a rainy foggy mess, but it made for some good work.

Angela Reunion

Catching up with friends when their briefly in town is something I always love to do. Luckily people seem to get more and more used to me bringing my camera around. It’s almost expected at this point. Angela was up for a friends event one night only and she convinced to drive out to livermore to hike through this super beautiful park I’d never heard of. The grass was green and there were cows and tons of hills and a lake. I want to return for another shoot.

Yule Burn

This is a yearly tradition my friends have been doing for so long it’s hard to remember a time when they didn’t. It’s a weird and silly little event near the end of January. After the holidays everyone collects Christmas trees and drags them to a beach for a big bonfire. Can’t speak for everyone but it’s a time to think on the new year, our friendships, our hopes, our successes, and all the hardships we’ve gone through. I’m not exactly the sappy type, but it holds a dear place in my heart and I couldn’t be more grateful for our community.

Diet Cig

Trying to get out to more music these days. It’s always such a blast no matter the tunes. This band is from LA and they killed it. Well actually all the bands that nite killed it but i def got the best photos of the lead act. They fucking slayed the nite. So much good energy and positive vibes.

I’ve been trying to experiment a little with ideas of darkness and lighting. Also focusing less on getting the shot perfectly in focus and aiming for a mood or feeling that is evocative without that tight focus. My frined Logan and I have been getting together at dusk and messing around with different things. Some of these are still very much my usual style, but hopefully there’s an enjoyable mix.

I don’t often spend holidays with family but I opted to do so this year since I may not see them for a while. As usual I brought my camera with me and managed to document some of the places i was staying in Austin. My family has a small property outside of town with some pretty landscape. They’ve got horses which I always forget are so huge and beautiful and peaceful. I also caught a sunrise after a huge storm. It was super foggy and cloudy but beautiful in that melancholy kind of way that I love. It’s not the most interesting of fair probably, but I still think i captured some beauty. Some of these photos are a little abstract for my normal work but when you’re out in the middle of a field shooting you make do with what you’ve got.

Short little roadtrip

managed to get out of town recently with my friend and traveling companion ari. we began in santa cruz and cruised down the coastline. taking the 1 all the way down to san luis obispo. we camped in some dispersed camping in the area. and wandered around some of the amazing parks in the area. who knew it was so beautiful.

Going Away

on my way back to the bay recently i stopped in santa cruz to surprise my friend monica at her going away party. i’m gonna miss that rascal, but hopefully i’ll be able to connect at her new home in the lost coast. It was dark and intimate lighting but i still managed to capture a few photos of friends and party goers. it’s been a long time since i was taking photos at a house party. it takes me back the my old t3i days.
